Choosing the right diet is an important part of seeing success in your weight loss journey. The right diet will accelerate your fat loss and help you shape your body, while the wrong diet could destroy your metabolism and even cause you to gain fat!
Make sure you are asking these questions before you choose a diet so that you can prevent making some critical mistakes.
Is the diet designed for you and your specific goals?
Not every diet is for everyone. The dietary needs someone will have will vary person to person, and so do the goals! Are you getting the same plan as someone else? Or was this diet plan created specifically for you and your goals?
If the plan you are considering is a generic plan off the Internet or out of a magazine or book, you should reconsider. Getting your nutritional needs determined by a professional will set you up for better life long success.
Is the diet based on scientific, sound and proven nutritional principles?
Look at the source of the diet plan you are considering. Is it coming from a person who is strongly educated in nutritional science? Or is it coming from the trendiest guru who “discovered” an ancient way of eating in his international travels?
Save your money and don’t go with the latter of the two. Those types of programs are sensational marketing tactics and won’t get you very far in terms of burning some fat! Look for an expert in the nutrition sciences to develop a safe and healthy program for you.
Do the foods on this plan sound appealing to you?
When you are reviewing your plan, do the foods suggested make you cringe a little? Then put that plan back. There are no miracle foods, or types of food that will help you lose weight. Your progress will mostly be determined by how much you eat.
If your program is calling for you to eat foods you don’t like without the option to make substitutions, you aren’t going to be able to adhere to the program long enough to make the progress you want to make. You don’t have to be restricted to bland, boring foods to see results; so don’t try to force yourself to!
Will this plan fit easily into your lifestyle?
Can you imagine yourself eating this way at home, at work, or at social events pretty easily? If not, you should reconsider the program. You should not have to sacrifice living 90% of your life to weigh 10% less. A well developed program will take into account your current lifestyle and allow you to make small lifestyle tweaks to see progress instead of completely uprooting the way your live.
Is there a “game plan” for when you hit a stall in your weight loss?
When you hit a stall in your progress (they happen to everyone!), does the program you are considering account for that and change?
As you go through a weight loss process, your body is changing! And as your body changes, it will require different nutritional needs than it did before. If your program doesn’t adjust along with your changing body, you’re only going to get as far as your first plateau.
Could you stay on this plan for an extended period of time without getting bored or feeling deprived?
If you feel bored on your diet, you are subject to temptation to stray away from the plan. Feeling deprived of your favorite foods on a diet can create disordered eating habits and a host of psychological issues. If you cannot see yourself sticking to the program for 3 -6 months, don’t try to force yourself to do so.
Is this a plan you can follow as long as you like, or is there a specific beginning and end-point?
Be wary of diets that have an end point. Diets that follow a schedule are a lot more open ended then they seem because once you finish, what do you do to maintain your new weight? Look for a program that promotes creating lifestyle habits that you can stick to for as long as you intend to keep the weight off.
You are much better off not dieting at all than you are dieting with the wrong diet because crash dieting is the beginning of the dreaded yo-yo cycle! Make sure your new diet program follows the guidelines above and you’ll be setting yourself up for long-term success!
